Makeup Essentials: How to Apply Cream Foundation

Cream foundation is great for people with dry skin or those who want extra coverage. However, applying cream foundation takes a bit of practice. If you’re interested in using cream foundation, but aren’t sure how to get started – and are perhaps worried about looking too made-up – this is the post for you. We’ve pulled together the ultimate guide about how to apply cream foundation.

  1. Before you learn how to apply cream foundation, it is important to start with a clean face! In the case of applying makeup, your face is the artists’ canvas, so you’ll want to ensure it is fresh and clean! Clean your skin using a reputable method, and make sure it is dry before using the foundation.
  2. The next trick in terms of how to apply cream foundation is to find a great primer, if necessary. If you tend to wear your makeup for long stretches at a time, or if your skin is oilier than normal, you may want to consider a primer.
  3. Choose either a brush or a makeup sponge to apply the foundation to your face. Because most ladies who are learning how to apply cream foundation find a makeup sponge easier, we’ll focus on that!
  4. Use a small amount of water to dampen the sponge. This is a pro tip: a damp sponge will make cream foundation apply more easily, and will give a nice and even finish.
  5. Apply a small amount of cream foundation to the end of the sponge. If you’re using a triangular sponge, this means applying the foundation to the narrow tip. Rather than putting a lot of foundation on the sponge at once – which will lead that “too much makeup” look – apply small amounts as needed.
  6. Apply cream foundation to the jawline and around your hairline in a downward motion. Once you’ve blended the makeup in these areas, apply the foundation to your nose, chin, cheeks and forehead. Again, use a downward motion and remember to use small amounts of foundation each time.
  7. Blend the makeup. Using your sponge and fingertips, blend the cream foundation to make sure it is even.
  8. Use a high-quality finishing powder over the cream foundation to ensure it is set, and stays in place!
